According to Daqin Railway's latest operating data, coal transport on the Daqin Line totaled 36.89 Mt in June 2026, up 13.79% year on year but down 5.05% (1.96 Mt) from May. The year-on-year growth rate also slowed by 4.08 percentage points from the previous month.

Average daily transport reached 1.23 Mt, compared with 1.08 Mt a year earlier. The railway operated an average of 86.9 heavy-haul trains per day, including 61.1 trains with 20,000-tonne capacity.

During January-June, the Daqin Line transported 203.76 Mt of cargo, up 7.96% year on year, with cumulative growth easing by 1.2 percentage points from the first five months.

The month-on-month decline in June was mainly driven by both supply and demand factors. On the supply side, tighter safety inspections following a coal mine accident in Changzhi, Shanxi, and the nationwide Safe Production Month led to temporary production cuts and slower mine resumptions. On the demand side, high coal inventories at ports and power plants, coupled with weak consumption, reduced shipping demand. Falling port coal prices and squeezed trading margins also discouraged shipments.

Despite the monthly decline, June transport remained significantly higher than a year earlier. Seasonal supply security efforts ahead of the summer peak demand period, replacement demand amid fluctuations in imported coal, and earlier-than-expected restocking by southern power plants helped support freight volumes.

Looking ahead, high downstream inventories, weak procurement demand, and cooler, wetter weather associated with typhoons could continue to weigh on coal transportation in July, with market attention focusing on whether post-rainfall heat waves will accelerate inventory drawdowns.
