Driven by persistent high temperatures, electricity demand in southern China has surged sharply. At 17:10 on July 9, the maximum power load of China Southern Power Grid reached a record 252 million kilowatts. Notably, Guangdong became the first province in mainland China to surpass 160 million kilowatts in power load.

Currently, electricity demand across the five provinces served by China Southern Power Grid remains stable, with ample power supply.
At 13:42 on July 9, Guangdong’s power load hit a new peak for the second time this year, reaching 164 million kilowatts—up 4.38% from last year’s highest level. Since the start of summer, 15 cities in Guangdong have broken historical load records. From July 7 to 9, Guangzhou and Shenzhen set new records for three consecutive days.
According to meteorological forecasts, temperatures across southern China are expected to remain higher than average throughout the summer of 2025, with more frequent heatwaves.
“In Guangdong, when the temperature exceeds 35°C, every additional degree can drive up power load by 3 to 5 million kilowatts,” explained Yang Minjing of the Guangdong Power Dispatch and Control Center. Guangdong’s installed renewable energy capacity has now exceeded 74 million kilowatts, making it the province’s largest power source by capacity.
In preparation for peak demand, China Southern Power Grid completed maintenance on major west-to-east transmission corridors and launched 22 key summer readiness projects. According to company officials, they will continue optimizing cross-provincial power coordination, maximizing renewable energy integration, deploying storage resources to balance peaks and troughs, and adjusting operational strategies to ensure power grid security and reliability.
