On July 9, the State Council Information Office held a press conference as part of its "High-Quality Implementation of the 14th Five-Year Plan" series. Officials from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) provided a comprehensive summary of the major breakthroughs China has achieved in energy, electricity, and clean energy during the current planning period.

China’s energy structure continues to improve.
For the first time in history, installed capacity for new energy power generation has surpassed that of coal-fired power. China has built the world’s largest clean power system, with one out of every three kilowatt-hours now generated from green electricity. In 2024, renewable power generation reached 3.46 trillion kWh, and total installed renewable capacity exceeded 2.09 billion kilowatts. China now boasts the world’s largest and fastest-growing renewable energy system.

Electric power infrastructure and energy supply capacity have been significantly enhanced.
China has developed the largest electric power infrastructure system in the world, accounting for one-third of global installed capacity. Even during peak demand seasons such as summer and winter, public energy needs are reliably met.

The rollout of EV charging infrastructure is accelerating.
By the end of 2024, the number of highway charging stations had more than quadrupled compared to four years prior, covering 98.4% of highway service areas. This expansion has greatly alleviated range anxiety for EV drivers and provided strong support for green mobility.

Energy security has been further strengthened.
China’s energy self-sufficiency remains above 80%. In 2024, the country’s total oil and gas output exceeded 400 million tonnes of oil equivalent for the first time, and power generation reached 10 trillion kWh. A diversified energy supply system—driven by coal, oil, gas, nuclear, and renewables—has effectively ensured energy access for more than 1.4 billion people.
