According to the latest data released by the China National Coal Association, China produced a total of 1.99 billion tons of raw coal in the first five months of 2025, an increase of 110 million tons year-on-year, setting a new record high for the same period in the history.

Coal imports totaled 189 million tons, down 7.9% year-on-year. As of June 16, coal inventory at key monitored coal mines stood at 35.96 million tons, up 0.5% from the end of May. Inventory at Bohai Rim ports was 28.55 million tons, down 5.5% from the end of May. National power plant stockpiles reached approximately 210 million tons in mid-June, an increase of around 3 million tons from late May—enough to cover about 35 days of consumption.
Zhang Hong, spokesperson for the China National Coal Association, stated: “In 2025, domestic coal production will continue to increase, coal imports will remain high, and consumption will grow slightly. Considering that total coal inventories across society remain at historically high levels, the coal market is expected to maintain a loose supply-demand balance throughout the year.”
With the ongoing release of advanced production capacity in Shanxi, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, and Xinjiang, the total coal output for the year is projected to grow by around 5%. Analyzing coal consumption trends in key sectors, thermal coal demand is expected to see limited growth this year. Coal consumption in the steel and construction materials industries is likely to remain stable or slightly decline, while the chemical industry’s demand is expected to grow modestly. Overall, total coal consumption is projected to rise by approximately 1.5% for the year.
In May, China produced 400 million tons of raw coal from enterprise above designated size, up 4.2% year-on-year. The average daily output reached 13.01 million tons, a historical record for the month and a 0.2% increase compared to April.
