The Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO) released its Global Electricity Development Index Report 2024, world's first of its kind, in New York, on July 10 (local time), at the Global Energy Interconnection (GEI) Thematic Event of the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. This report introduces a multidimensional and systematic evaluation system for electricity development, assessing regional and national electricity development levels across four dimensions of power supply, consumption services, green and low-carbon development and technological innovation. It helps countries identify suitable pathways for green, low-carbon, and sustainable electricity development tailored to their specific circumstances.

The GEI Thematic Event of the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development aimed to address the pressing need for accelerating the global energy transition and enhancing connectivity. The thematic focus underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in fostering sustainable energy solutions worldwide. Through the participation of high-level representatives and experts, the event reinforced the importance of international cooperation in tackling energy challenges and promoting sustainable development.

Xin Baoan, GEIDCO's chairman of and president of China Electricity Council (CEC), delivered an opening speech via video link. He said that energy is a vital foundation for economic and social development and plays a pivotal role in sustainable development. The green and low-carbon development of electricity will largely determine the success of sustainable development.

The event was co-hosted by the GEIDCO and such organizations as the Permanent Mission of the People's Republic of China to the UN, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and the Latin American Energy Organization.
