Vietnam will ramp up the use of coal and gas sources and mobilize renewable sources to ensure sufficient supply of electricity for the Southeast Asian country as the demand is projected to increase in 2023, local media reported on Thursday.

The country is set to produce and import 284.5 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity this year, 16 billion kWh higher than the 2022 figure and 29 billion kWh more than in 2021, according to the Vietnam News.

The plan is based on a gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 6.5 percent approved by the country's legislative body and a planned total supply of nearly 251.3 billion kWh for residents nationwide, an increase of nearly 9 billion kWh against last year, the newspaper reported.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has instructed the Vietnam Electricity company to establish suitable operating methods and mobilize power sources, including renewables, to ensure a sufficient supply for the country, it said.

According to the ministry's Department of Oil, Gas, and Coal, about 57.9 million tonnes of coal are expected to reach the market in 2023, with 44.7 million tonnes planned to be domestically produced and 13.2 million tonnes imported.

By the end of 2022, Vietnam's total installed capacity was almost 77,800 megawatts, an increase of 1,400 MW against 2021. Renewable energy accounted for 26.4 percent, or 20,165 MW, according to the ministry.
