India's Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) Thursday asked Coal India Limited and the local governments of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to ensure no coal is supplied to agents operating in the National Capital Region (NCR).

The step is part of efforts to abate air pollution arising out of emissions from highly polluting fossil fuels like coal and furnace oil, among others, said a statement issued by the federal ministry of environment.

The commission is a statutory authority formed in 2020 to curb the growing air pollution in the National Capital Region and adjoining areas.

"Statutory directions of the commission require complete elimination of the use of coal and other unapproved fuels for various operations or applications across all sectors, with effect from Jan. 1 in the entire NCR," said the statement.

In compliance with the CAQM's directions, 84 industrial units across NCR areas of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, which were hitherto not using approved fuels, closed down their operations temporarily or permanently on their own.

The NCR is a planning region centered upon the National Capital Territory of Delhi in India and encompasses Delhi and several districts surrounding it from the states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
