Electricity generation in China rose 0.2% in August from a year earlier

Electricity growth slowed sharply in August 2021, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). China's absolute power generation in August was 738.3 billion kilowatt-hours, up 0.2% year on year, with the growth rate narrowing by 9.4 percentage points from the previous month, and 7.1 percent higher than the same period in 2019, with a two-year average growth of 3.5%. The average daily power generation was 23.82 billion kilowatt-hours.
 
By category, the growth rate of thermal power, nuclear power, wind power and solar power all slowed in August, while the decline rate of hydropower slightly widened. Among them, thermal power grew by 0.3% year-on-year, with a two-year average growth of 3.2% based on August 2019. Hydropower supply fell by 4.7%, with an average growth of 1.9% over the past two years. Nuclear power grew by 10.2%, with a two-year average growth of 5.5%. Wind power grew by 7.0%, with a two-year average growth of 12.7%; Solar power grew 8.5 percent, a two-year average of 5.3 percent.
 
To be specific, in August, the country's absolute thermal power generation capacity was 516.7 billion kilowatt-hours, up 0.3% year on year, 12.4 percentage points lower than that of July. Absolute hydropower generation was 137 billion kilowatt-hours, down 4.7% year on year and 0.4 percentage points more than in the previous month. Nuclear power generation reached 36.5 billion KWH, up 10.2% year on year, narrowing by 4.2 percentage points from July. Absolute wind power generation was 32.2 billion KWH, up 7% year on year, 18.4 percentage points lower than in July; Absolute solar power output was 15.9 billion kilowatt-hours, up 8.5 percent year on year, narrowing by 3.6 percentage points from July.
 
On a month-on-month basis, electricity generation decreased by 20.3 billion KWH in August, down 2.68%; Thermal power generation decreased by 7.3 billion KWH, down 1.39%; Hydropower generation decreased by 5.2 billion KWH, down 3.66%; Nuclear power generation decreased by 1.7 billion KWH, down 4.45%. Wind power generation decreased by 5.8 billion KWH, down 15.26%; Solar power generation decreased by 300 million KWH month-on-month, down 1.85 percent.
 
From January to August 2021, China's absolute power generation capacity was 5,389.4 billion kilowatt-hours, up 11.3 percent year on year, 1.9 percentage points lower than that of the previous 7 months, and 11.6 percent higher than the same period in 2019, with a two-year average growth of 5.7 percent.
 
Among them, the country's absolute thermal power generation capacity was 3,872.3 billion kilowatt-hours, up 12.6% year on year, 2.1 percentage points less than that of the previous 7 months. Absolute hydropower generation was 761.7 billion kilowatt-hours, down 1 percent year on year, after expanding 0.9 percent in the previous 7 months. Nuclear power generation was 269.9 billion KWH, up 13.3% year on year, 0.5 percentage points less than in the previous 7 months; Absolute wind power generation was 365.1 billion KWH, up 28.1% year on year, and the growth rate was 1.2 percentage points lower than that of the previous 7 months. Absolute solar power generation was 120.4 billion kilowatt-hours, up 10.3% year on year and 0.6 percentage points higher than in the previous 7 months.
