Electricity production in China increased 9.6 percent in July

Electricity production accelerated in July 2021, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). China's absolute power generation in July was 758.6 billion KWH, up 9.6% year on year, and up 11.7% from the same period in 2019. The two-year average growth was 5.7%, and the average daily power generation was 24.47 billion KWH.
 
By type, thermal power, nuclear power and wind power all showed rapid growth in July, while hydropower saw a narrower decline and solar power slightly decreased. Among them, thermal power increased by 12.7% year on year. Based on July 2019, the two-year average growth was 5.8%. Hydropower decreased by 4.3%, with a two-year average growth of 0.8%. Nuclear power grew by 14.4%, with a two-year average growth of 10.5%. Wind power increased by 25.4%, with a two-year average growth of 24.3%; Solar power grew 12.1 percent, compared with a two-year average of 5.5 percent.
 
Specifically, in July, China's absolute coal-fired power generation was 524 billion KWH, up 12.7% year on year and 2.6 percentage points higher than in June. Absolute hydropower generation was 142.2 billion KWH, down 4.3 percent year on year and 1.3 percentage points narrower than last month. Nuclear power generated 38.2 billion KWH, up 14.4 percent year on year and 1.5 percentage points higher than June. Absolute wind power generation was 38 billion KWH, up 25.4% year on year and up 13 percentage points from June. Absolute solar power output of 16.2 billion kilowatt-hours was up 12.1 percent year on year, 0.4 percentage points slower than June.
 
On a month-on-month basis, electricity generation increased by 72.6 billion KWH in July, up 10.58%. Thermal power generation increased 42.7 billion KWH, up 8.87%; Hydropower generation increased by 28 billion KWH, up by 24.52%; Nuclear power generation increased by 2.3 billion KWH month-on-month, up 6.41%; Wind power generation decreased by 600 million KWH, down 1.55%; Solar power generation increased by 100 million KWH month-on-month, up 0.62 percent.
 
The country's absolute power generation from January to July 2021 was 4,645 billion KWH, up 13.2% year on year, 0.5 percentage points lower than the previous 6 months, up 12.2% from the same period in 2019, and a two-year average growth of 5.9%.
 
Among them, China's absolute coal-fired power generation was 3,353.7 billion KWH, up 14.7 percent year on year, 0.3 percentage points lower than the previous 6 months. Absolute hydropower generation was 624.7 billion KWH, down 0.1 percent from a year earlier. Nuclear power generated 233.3 billion KWH, up 13.8% year on year and 0.1 percentage points higher than the previous 6 months. Absolute wind power generation was 329.4 billion KWH, up 29.3% year on year and 2.7 percentage points higher than the previous 6 months. Absolute solar power generation was 103.8 billion KWH, up 9.7 percent year on year, up 0.7 percentage points from the previous 6 months.
