The fifth set of generators at Hong Yanghe nuclear power plant in Northeast China's Liaoning Province completed its 168-hour-trial on Saturday and is now ready for commercial operation, Hong Yanghe Nuclear Power announced on Sunday via its official WeChat account.

The set of generators at Hong Yanhe nuclear power plant is forecast to be able to generate 37.5 billion kilowatt-hours a year, equivalent to about 15 percent of Liaoning Province's annual power usage.

The generators will also save 11.3 million tons of coal used for power generation, and cut off 31.2 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year, equal to 84,000 hectares of forest trees.

Hong Yanhe nuclear power plant was the country's first and the most-advanced nuclear power plant in Northeast China. The two phases of the nuclear power plant have received more than 80 billion yuan ($12.38 billion) in investment.

The generators one-four of the first phase of the nuclear power plant were put into operation in 2016. The construction of second batch of generators five-six were started on 2015, and the latest batch of generator five will be put into service shortly, while generator set six is being tested.

After Japan's Fukushima nuclear disaster, generator set five of Hong Yanghe nuclear power plant conducted series of security self-inspections, installing new security technologies including portable emergency power source and water supply system.
