Power generation in China rose 7.4 percent in June

China's power production growth slowed in June 2021, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). In June 2021, China's absolute power generation capacity reached 686 billion kilowatt-hours, up 7.4 percent year on year and 14.5 percent over the same period in 2019, with a two-year average increase of 7.0 percent, with a daily average of 22.87 billion kilowatt-hours.
In June, thermal power, nuclear power and solar power all grew rapidly, while the growth rate of hydropower turned from positive to negative, while wind power fell. Thermal power grew by 10.1% year on year, with a two-year average growth of 7.7% based on June 2019. Hydropower decreased by 5.6 percent, with a two-year average increase of 0.5 percent; Nuclear power grew by 12.9%, with a two-year average growth of 13.3%; Wind power grew by 12.4%, with a two-year average growth of 14.1%; Solar power grew 12.5 percent, a two-year average of 9.1 percent.
Specifically, in June, the country's absolute thermal power generation capacity was 481.3 billion kilowatt-hours, up 10.1% year on year, 4.5 percentage points higher than that in May. Absolute hydropower generation capacity was 114.2 billion kilowatt-hours, down 5.6% year on year. Nuclear power generation was 35.9 billion kilowatt-hours, up 12.9% year on year, or 2.7 percentage points higher than that in May. The absolute wind power generation capacity was 38.6 billion kilowatt-hours, up 12.4% year on year, or 8.3 percentage points lower than that in May. The absolute solar power generation capacity was 16.1 billion kilowatt-hours, up 12.5 percent year on year, 3.8 percentage points higher than that in May.
In month-on-month terms, power generation in June increased by 38.2 billion kilowatt-hours, up by 5.9%. Thermal power generation increased by 30.6 billion kilowatt-hours from the previous month, up 6.79%; Hydroelectric power generation increased by 18.6 billion kilowatt-hours from the previous month, up 19.46%; Nuclear power generation increased by 1.6 billion kWh from the previous month, with an increase of 4.66%; Wind power generation decreased by 12.1 billion kilowatt-hours, down 23.87%; Solar power generation fell by 500 million kilowatt-hours, down 3.01 percent.
From January to June 2021, China's absolute power generation capacity reached 3,871.7 billion kilowatt-hours, up 13.7% year on year, and 11.2 percentage points lower than that in the previous 5 months.
Of this, the country's absolute thermal power generation capacity was 2,826.2 billion kilowatt-hours, up 15% year on year and 1 percentage point lower than that in the previous 5 months. Absolute hydropower power generation capacity was 482.7 billion kilowatt-hours, up 1.4% year on year, 2.4 percentage points lower than that in the previous 5 months. Nuclear power generation was 195.1 billion kilowatt-hours, up 13.7% year on year, or 0.2 percentage points lower than in the previous 5 months. The absolute wind power generation capacity was 281.9 billion kilowatt-hours, up 26.6 percent year on year, 0.1 percentage point lower than the previous 5 months. The absolute solar power generation capacity was 85.8 billion kilowatt-hours, up 9% year on year and 1.1 percentage points higher than that in the first 5 months.
