Power consumption rose 12.5 percent in May from a year earlier

China's economy continued to recover steadily in May, with power consumption growing rapidly to 672.4 billion kilowatt-hours, up 12.5 percent year on year and 18.7 percent from the same period in 2019.
By industry, the primary industry consumed 7.9 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, up 13.9% year on year. Electricity consumption in the secondary industry was 470.5 billion kilowatt-hours, up 11.5% year on year. It contributed about 65% to the growth of the whole society and was the main driver of the growth of the whole society's electricity consumption. Electricity consumption in the tertiary industry was 110.4 billion kilowatt-hours, up 23.4% year on year, maintaining rapid growth. Domestic electricity consumption for urban and rural residents was 83.6 billion kilowatt-hours, up 5.6% year on year.
From January to May, China's electricity consumption totaled 3230.5 billion kilowatt-hours, up 17.7 percent year on year. The rising demand for electricity is mainly due to a number of factors such as the continuous improvement of the economy, the production of large industries and the high temperature.
