The National Energy Administration on April 29 held a second quarter online press conference, the first quarter of the rapid growth of thermal coal demand.
Coal consumption in the first quarter rose 15.8 percent year on year and 8.4 percent from the same period in 2019. Among them, the consumption of thermal coal increased by 20.6% year on year, contributing 72.6% to the growth of coal consumption. The coal used for building materials increased by 39.7% year on year, contributing 17%.
The immediate cause of this is rapid growth in electricity consumption.
In the first quarter, electricity consumption increased 21.2 percent year on year, driving the annual growth of 4.5 percentage points and 14.4 percent compared with the same period in 2019.
From the perspective of industry, electricity from secondary generation was the main driving force for the growth of electricity consumption in the whole society, with a year-on-year growth of 24.1% and a year-on-year growth of 15.4% compared with the same period in 2019, contributing 72.8% to the growth of electricity consumption in the whole society. Electricity consumption for tertiary production has picked up significantly, and its growth rate has increased month by month since January, with a cumulative growth rate of 28.2% in the first quarter, a sharp increase of 16.5% compared with the same period in 2019. Primary power generation continued to grow at a high speed, with a growth rate of 26.4% in the first quarter, up 31.4% compared with the same period in 2019.
