Data show that in March 2021, Russia's coal loading volume by railway increased 9.9% year on year to 32.3 million tons; In the first quarter of 2021, Russia's coal loading volume by railway increased by 5.6% from the same period last year to 92.1 million tons, but still decreased by 5.2% compared to 2019.
In the first quarter of 2021, Russia's coal production increased by 8.5% compared to the same period in 2020, reaching 108.136 million tons; Coal supplies to the domestic market increased 3.9 percent to 47.14 million tons; Exported supply rose 14.4% to 47.42 million tons. Russia's coal production in March was up 11.7% from a year earlier to more than 38 million tons, while coal supplies to the domestic market were up 15.5% and exports were up 12.1%.
According to Russian Railways, coal loads at stations in the Kmerovo region increased by 8 percent, or 19 million tons, in March. The region's coal-loading stations handled 53.2 million tons of cargo, up 4.1 percent from last year. The largest coal loads in the first quarter of this year came from Kuzbas stations, such as Erunakovskaya (10 million tons), Terentyevskaya (3.7 million tons), Mezhdurechensk (over 3.1 million tons), and Myski (nearly 3 million tons).
In addition to the growing production and transportation, Russian leaders paid attention to the coal industry throughout the first quarter, especially at a meeting on the development of the coal industry on March 2, when Russian President Vladimir Putin paid special attention to Kuzbas' export potential. Gov. Kuzbas said at a press conference in early April: "We have set clear guidelines for the development of the Eastern Polygon. The plan is to increase Kuzbas coal exports to the east by at least 30 percent by 2024 compared to 2020. As a result, 58 million tons of coal will be shipped east by 2022 and 68 million tons by 2024. At the same time, over the past four years, our coal production has remained at 53 million tons. Expanding capacity is an important strategic decision that will allow the coal industry to develop and plan investments, 900 days from now is a new phase in our coal industry's development."
Moreover, though recently the epidemic situation in Mongolia is very serious, every day of the new confirmed cases are still stubbornly high. However, the quantity of coal clearance in Mongolia is gradually picking up, and the cargo passage at Garhun Suhaitu/Ganqimodu Port in the China-Mongolia border area remains unblocked. On April 19, the number of vehicles cleared by customs in Ganqimodu has risen to about 130.
