Power generation in China increased by 19% in the first quarter

China's power production grew faster in March 2021, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
 
In March 2021, China's absolute power generation capacity was 657.9 billion kilowatt-hours, up 17.4 percent year on year, up 12.0 percent over March 2019, and up 5.8 percent on two-year average, with a daily average of 21.22 billion kilowatt-hours.
 
In March, thermal power, nuclear power and wind power continued to grow, while hydropower and solar power declined. Thermal power grew by 25.7% year on year, with a two-year average growth of 7.8% based on March 2019. Hydropower decreased by 11.5 percent, with a two-year average decrease of 8.8 percent; Nuclear power grew by 11.7%, with a two-year average growth of 9.2%; Wind power grew by 4.0%, with a two-year average growth of 10.8%; Solar power fell 0.6%, with a two-year average growth of 3.9%.
 
Specifically, in March, the country's absolute thermal power generation capacity was 495.3 billion kWh, up 25.7% year on year; Absolute hydropower generation capacity was 67 billion kilowatt-hours, down 11.5 percent year on year; Nuclear power generated 34.2 billion kilowatt-hours, up 11.7 percent year on year; Absolute wind power generation capacity was 47.3 billion kilowatt-hours, up 4% year on year; Absolute solar power generation was 14.1 billion kilowatt-hours, down 0.6 percent year on year.
 
From January to March 2021, China's absolute power generation capacity reached 1,905.1 billion kilowatt-hours, up 19% year on year and 0.5 percentage points lower than that of the previous two months.
 
Of this, the country's absolute thermal power generation capacity was 1437.9 billion kilowatt-hours, up 21.1% year on year, and 2.7 percentage points lower than the previous two months. Absolute hydroelectric power generation capacity was 195.9 billion kilowatt-hours, up 0.5% year on year, or 8 percentage points lower than that in the first two months. Nuclear power generation was 92.6 billion kilowatt-hours, up 18.8% year on year, or 4.6 percentage points lower than in the first two months. The absolute wind power generation capacity was 140.1 billion kilowatt-hours, up 30.9% year on year, or 18.1 percentage points lower than that in the first two months. The absolute solar power generation capacity was 38.8 billion kilowatt-hours, up 14.1 percent year on year, or 11.7 percentage points lower than that in the first two months.
