China's benchmark power coal price rose slightly during the past week.

The Bohai-Rim Steam-Coal Price Index (BSPI), a gauge of coal prices in north China's major ports, stood at 578 yuan (about 88.38 U.S. dollars) per tonne Wednesday, a rise of 4 yuan week on week, according to Qinhuangdao Ocean Shipping Coal Trading Market Co. Ltd.

Affected by a widespread fall in temperatures across the country, the demand for heating and electricity has entered the peak season. Analysts said the peak season for coal consumption in winter, coupled with a tight market supply, led to the price rise.

Released by the Qinhuangdao Ocean Shipping Coal Trading Market Co. Ltd. every Wednesday, the BSPI is a leading indicator of China's coal prices.
