China Southern Power Grid's 800-kilovolt ultra-high voltage direct current project was put into operation on Friday, and will transmit 33 billion kilowatt-hour water power from Southwest China to the country's southeast areas.

The project, called Multi-terminal UHVDC Demonstration Project from Wudongde Power Station to Guangdong and Guangxi, or Kunbei-Liubei-Longmen DC Project for short, passes through Southwest China's Yunnan and Guizhou provinces, South China's Guangdong province and Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. The total length of the project is 1,452 kilometers.

According to a report by China Southern Power Grid, the project will provide green energy resources to areas that report heavy power load in Guangdong-Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, and will help with the economic recovery of the area.

The construction of the project began in December 2018 with an investment of 24.26 billion yuan ($3.48 billion), and is scheduled to complete in 2021.
