In May, the production of raw coal for industrial enterprises above designated size changed from growth to decline, the production of crude oil and electricity accelerated, and the production of natural gas maintained rapid growth.
1. Production of raw coal, crude oil and natural gas and related information
The production of raw coal changed from increase to decrease. In May, raw coal production was 320 million tons, down 0.1 percent year on year and up 6.0 percent in the previous month. Average daily output was 10.29 million tons, down 450,000 tons month-on-month. From January to May, China produced 1.47 billion tons of raw coal, up 0.9 percent year-on-year.
Coal imports fell sharply, and port trading prices recovered. In May, China imported 22.06 million tons of coal, down 8.89 million tons month-on-month and 19.7 percent year-on-year. From January to May, China imported 149 million tons of coal, up 16.8% year-on-year. On June 5, the prices of 5500 kcal, 5000 kcal and 4500 kcal coal at Qinhuangdao Port were 536 Yuan, 485 Yuan and 431 Yuan per ton, respectively, up 35 Yuan, 43 Yuan and 35 Yuan from the low point of the year on May 8.
Crude oil production has been accelerated and processing volume has increased rapidly. In May, crude oil production reached 16.46 million tons, up 1.3 percent year on year and 0.4 percentage points faster than the previous month. Processed crude oil reached 57.9 million tons, up 8.2 percent, 7.4 percentage points faster than the previous month. From January to May, China produced 80.9 million tons of crude oil, up by 1.9% year on year; processed crude oil was 261.39 million tons, down 1.0%.
The import of crude oil changed from decline to increase, and the international crude oil price recovered rapidly. In May, imports of crude oil reached 47.97 million tons, up 19.2 percent from a year earlier, down 7.5 percent from the previous month. From January to May, the import of crude oil reached 215.58 million tons, up by 5.2% year-on-year.
Natural gas production has maintained rapid growth. In May, China produced 15.9 billion cubic meters of natural gas, up 12.7 percent year on year and 1.6 percentage points lower than the previous month, with an average daily output of 510 million cubic meters. From January to May, China produced 78.8 billion cubic meters of natural gas, up 10.1 percent year on year.
Natural gas imports grew steadily. In May, imports of natural gas reached 7.84 million tons, up 3.7 percent from a year earlier. From January to May, China imported 40.12 million tons of natural gas, up 1.9% year on year.
2. Electric power production
Electricity production was significantly accelerated. In May, the generating capacity was 593.2 billion KWH, up 4.3 percent year on year and 4.0 percentage points faster than the previous month. The average daily generating capacity was 19.14 billion KWH, up 660 million KWH month-on-month. From January to May, power generation was 2732.5 billion KWH, down 3.1 percent year on year.
In May, the growth rate of thermal power, nuclear power and wind power picked up significantly, hydropower dropped more sharply, and the growth rate of solar power fell. Thermal power plants grew 9.0 percent year on year, 7.8 percentage points faster than the previous month. Nuclear power grew by 14.3 percent, an acceleration of 3.6 percentage points. Wind power increased by 5.2%, accelerating by 4.0 percentage points; Hydropower dropped by 16.5%, 7.3 percentage points more than the previous month. Solar power generation grew by 7.1 percent, 5.2 percentage points lower than the previous month.
