According to the latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on May 15, the country's raw coal output in April 2020 was 322.12 million tons, up 6.0 percent year on year and the increase degree narrowed by 3.6 percentage points from the previous month.
On a month-on-month basis, the output was down 15.14 million tons, or 4.49 percent from 337.26 million tons in March.
In April, the average daily output was 10.74 million tons, 140,000 tons less than in March.
From January to April 2020, China's cumulative raw coal output was 1152.44 million tons, up 1.3 percent year on year, compared with a 0.5 percent decline in the previous three months.
In April, with the continuous improvement of the epidemic situation throughout the country, the production of coal mines in various regions improved further, and the output of raw coal maintained a rapid growth.
However, under the circumstance that the port price falls below the green range and further drops to the edge of the red range, a variety of factors, such as superposition of shipment and inversion, sluggish downstream demand, high coal storage at the terminal place and port, result in a decrease in the utilization rate of coal mine capacity, and a decline in the output of raw coal on a month-on-month basis.
In fact, while the reduction of coal demand is inevitable, the release rate of coal capacity far exceeds the growth rate of demand, and the trend of coal supply shifting to a loose direction is also inevitable.
