China, India, the United States, Japan, South Korea, South Africa, Germany, Russia, Indonesia and Australia are the top 10 countries in terms of total coal-fired power generation in 2019, according to data released by the global energy monitoring agency.
The 10 countries account for 87 percent of the world's electricity generated by coal-fired power stations, with China, the world's largest country, generating 50.2 percent of the world's electricity from coal-fired power stations.
In terms of new coal-fired power stations, only 3 of the 10 countries -- the United States, Germany and Australia -- had no new coal-fired power stations in 2019, and the United States closed 16.5 gigawatts of coal-fired power plants in 2019, ranking first among the 10 countries. Of the other 7 countries, China alone put 43.8gw of new coal-fired power stations into operation, despite the closure of 7gw of capacity that year.
In addition, only Germany, of the 10 countries, has made it clear that it will phase out coal-fired power stations and set a deadline of 2038. To make this happen, the country closed 1.2 gigawatts of coal-fired power stations in 2019.
According to the data, Australia is the only one of the 10 countries that neither added nor closed coal-fired power stations in 2019.
