One miner was killed and eight were injured as a result of an underground tremor in Rydultowy mine, southern Poland, the State Mining Authority announced on Wednesday.
The tremor occurred on Tuesday night. Most of the 20 miners, who were then working in the tremor area, 1,200 meters underground, managed to leave on their own.
Six injured miners have been released from hospital, and two still hospitalized. Their life is not in danger.
The rescue team is currently working to bring the body to the surface.
The magnitude of the tremor was about 3.25 degrees on the Richter scale. Polish Press Agency reported that the Rydultowy mine is one of the most vulnerable to shocks in the whole Polish mining industry and has observed fatal accidents caused by tremors in the past.
This has been the fifth fatal victim in the Polish mining industry this year. An investigation has been initiated by the Regional Mining Authority in Rybnik to determine the cause of the incident.
