According to the latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the country's raw coal output in 2019 reached 3.75 billion tons, an increase of 4.2 percent over the previous year.

Eight of the country's 25 coal-producing provinces produced more than 100 million tons of coal. Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Xinjiang, Guizhou, Shandong, Anhui and Henan are listed in the same order as last year. Among them, Inner Mongolia produced 1.035m tonnes, up 8.5 percent year-on-year, making it the first Chinese province to pass the 1bn tonne mark. Shanxi and Shaanxi ranked second and third, with output of 971 million and 634 million tons, up 6.1% and 1.7%, respectively. The annual output of the 10 provinces and regions is less than 15 million tons, including Fujian, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Hubei and Beijing.

It can be seen from the data that China's coal production is further concentrated in the main coal-producing areas. Although the 25 coal-producing provinces together grew 4.2 percent, output rose in only eight, while output fell in the remaining 17. All of the top five provinces and regions increased, while all of the bottom 12 provinces and regions fell except Qinghai.

The output of raw coal in the three provinces of Shanxi, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia totaled 2.64 billion tons, accounting for 70.5% of the national total, an increase of 1.1 percentage points over the previous year. The total increasing output of the three provinces and autonomous regions increased by 147.96 million tons, accounting for 97.3% of the national total. The combined output of the bottom 10 provinces and regions was 75.57 million tons, accounting for only 2.02 percent of the country's total, down 0.36 percentage points from the previous year.
