The energy conservation and low-carbon development report of China's iron and steel industry in 2019 shows that China's energy consumption structure has been optimized at a faster pace, with the proportion of coal consumption in primary energy falling rapidly from 67.4% in 2013 to 59.0% in 2018, and the proportion of coal consumption dropping below 60% for the first time.
Meanwhile, the share of clean energy consumption rose from 15.5 percent in 2013 to 22.1 percent in 2018, with the development of renewable energy accelerating, according to the report. The share of industry in total energy consumption continued to decline, falling 5.1 percentage points from 70.8% in 2012 to 65.7% in 2017.
From 2013 to 2018, China's energy consumption on the whole maintained growth, rising from 4.169 billion tons of standard coal in 2013 to 4.640 billion tons of standard coal in 2018. The elasticity coefficient of energy consumption changed in a U-shaped shape, falling to 0.13 in 2015, rising continuously for three years from 2016 to 2018, and then back to 0.50 in 2018, indicating that economic development has greatly increased its dependence on the growth of energy consumption.
The report also forecasts energy efficiency targets for 2020. It is estimated that the total energy consumption of China's steel industry will decline year on year in 2020 on the condition of a 0.60% reduction in output. The average comprehensive energy consumption of steel industry is 550 kg of standard coal, down 0.54% year on year.
