With the rapid promotion of electric energy substitution, the industrial and energy structure has been adjusted and optimized continuously; the rapid development of new and high technologies pushes new electricity demand; the construction of clean energy power generation continues to expand, leading to the steady growth of electric power production across the country.
In 2018, the country generated 7.1 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity, an increase of 31.3% over 2013. Average daily electricity generation reached 19.54 billion kilowatt-hours, an increase of 4.66 billion kilowatt-hours over 2013.
The growth rate of power generation in the western region is higher than that in the central and eastern regions. Compared with 2013, power generation in the eastern, central, western and northeastern regions increased by 28.5%, 22.2%, 42.3% and 21.6% respectively in 2018. The higher growth rate of power generation in the western region is mainly due to the development of clean energy and steady progress in the construction of power transmission channels.
In 2018, thermal power generation reached 5.0963 trillion kilowatt-hours, an increase of 20.0 percent over 2013, far lower than the 71.8 percent growth rate of clean energy generation. Thermal power accounted for 71.5 percent, down 6.7 percentage points from 2013. In 2018, hydropower generation reached 1,231.8 billion kilowatt-hours, an increase of 311.5 billion kilowatt-hours over 2013 and an average annual increase of 6.0 percent over the past five years. In 2018, the country's nuclear power generation capacity reached 294.4 billion kilowatt-hours, an increase of 163.7 percent over 2013 and an average annual growth of 21.4 percent. In 2018, wind power generation reached 355.3 billion kilowatt-hours, up 151.6 percent over 2013 and an average annual growth of 20.3 percent, accounting for 5.0 percent of total power generation, 2.4 percentage points higher than 2013. In 2018, solar power generated 153.6 billion kilowatt-hours, an increase of 128.4 billion kilowatt-hours over 2014 and an annual growth of 57.2 percent.
