China's coal imports to ports surged 11 percent in 2019

Statistics show that as of December 31, 2019, China's coal imports to ports totaled 265 million tons in 2019, an increase of 28.1 million tons over 2018. Among them, coal imports to Southern China were 149 million tons, accounting for 56% of the country's total; Eastern China and the Yangtze River region were next at 69 million tons, accounting for 26 percent of the country's total. According to the monthly data, the average monthly arrivals in 2019 were 24.37 million tons, reaching a peak of 25.91 million tons in May, and the overall trend in the second half of the year was downward.
 
In terms of country of origin, China imported 140 million tons of coal to ports from Indonesia in 2019, an increase of 15.25 million tons over the previous year, with an average monthly import of 12.04 million tons. China imported 75 million tons of coal to ports from Australia, the same amount as in 2018, and 6.31 million tons per month.
 
Among China's top 10 coal import ports, Guangzhou is the largest with 23.76 million tons, followed by Xiuyu with 20.58 million tons. The remaining ports that exceed 10 million tons are Fangcheng, Qinzhou, Zhanjiang, Zhoushan and Yingkou.
 
In terms of the import situation of major domestic direct-dependent power plants, in 2019, the coal import volume of Huanneng Haimen, Zhejiang Energy Zhongmei Zhoushan and Datang Chaozhou power plants accounts for 46% of the total import volume of direct-dependent power plants, among which, Huanneng Haimen accounts for 17%, Zhejiang Energy Zhongmei Zhoushan power plant accounts for 15% and Datang Chaozhou accounts for 14%. Huaneng Shanghai Waigaoqiao No.2 power plant ranked fourth with 12%. The rest of the top 10 power plants account for between 6% and 10%.
