Australia expects coking coal and thermal coal exports to grow in 2019

In the first three quarters of 2019, Australia's production of black coal (raw) was 424 million tons, down 2.3% from a year earlier, according to the latest Resources and Energy Quarterly (December 2019) from the federal Department of Industry, Innovation and Science. Production of black coal (saleable) for sale was 338 million tons, down 0.5% year on year. Coal exports rose 2.9 per cent to 295m tonnes, with metallurgical coal exports up 4.5 percent to 138m tones and thermal coal exports up 1.5 percent to 157m tonnes.
The report also predicted that Australia's coal exports could reach 393 million tons in 2019, up 6.3 million tons from 2018 and up 1.6 percent year on year, a record high for coal exports. Among them, exports of metallurgical coal totaled 184 million tons, up 3.1 percent year on year; Thermal coal exports were 209 million tons, up 0.6 percent year on year.
